The
White Tiger Tundra is a color morph associated with Panthera
tigris altaica - white
tigers - as referred to by many may be a misnomer
since this is considered a sub-species - still it's not entirely
incorrect either - my three year old says "WHITE" so
she must be right. The common or more correct name for Tundra's
species
is "Siberian
Tiger" or "Siberian White
Tiger." Tundra was born July 4th, 2000 at a weight of
1.8 lbs. They are so
cute
and
lovable
when they are this size but require expert handlers and obviously
are not suited as pets! The staff at Tigerhomes
educated me on what it takes to handle white tigers and expressed
that
it takes many years of experience and special training and
licensing. Still they look so irresistable that it's easy to
forget these
are
wild
animals.

Tundra
was sponsored and named by www.tigerhomes.org (Animal
Sanctuary). Tundra's keepers refer to her as playful and
say she is a joy to interact with.

I'd like to thank Tigerhomes for
educating me on many of the animals in their sanctuary. There's
very few sites on the Internet with as much information as they
offer. |

Tigers are
the largest living felines in the world today. Their stripes
provide camouflage in their natural
habitat.
White
Tigers are not a separate species or sub-species, but
originated from a wild caught white Indian Tiger. These great felines
live
in humid and hot jungles as well as ice cold forest areas. There
are
5
different
types or sub-species
of tiger which are still alive today. They are called Siberian,
Indochinese, South China, Bengal, and Sumatran. Their Latin name
is Panthera tigris. All listed are an endangered species; only
about 4,800 to 7,300 tigers are left in the wild. Three tiger subspecies,
which are now extinct are: the Bali, Javan, and Caspian.
The
size of a tiger's territory depends on the amount of
food available, and usually ranges from about 10 to 30
square
miles (26-78 sq. km). Siberian species sometimes have
really big territories (as large as 120 square miles).
Although
tigers usually live alone, tiger territories can overlap.
A male's territory usually overlaps those of several
female tigers. Today only about 5,000–7,000 live
across Asia. The past and present ranges of the remaining
five subspecies are illustrated.
The
northernmost living tiger, the Amur or Siberian species,
lives primarily in southeastern Russia. The South China
tigers occur only in southern China. The range of the
Indochinese tiger extends across most of Southeast Asia.
Bengal
tigers are found primarily in India, while the Sumatran
tiger is restricted to the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
The
Bali, Caspian, and Javan species have become extinct
in the past 70 years. |
