Advanced Icon Editing for Windows

I am calling this Advanced Icon Editing but really these are pretty simple procedures for editing an icon using Microangelo for Windows. In Steps 1 through 8 we explored the very basics of opening a stand-alone Windows icon, icon editing, and saving the modified icon resource. All we did was turn the background of the icon from blue to gray (see Figure I). Now I'd like to introduce some new ways of editing an icon.

Figure I - We created a gray background from the original blue.

The Changes I Want to Make to this Icon

First of all I don't like the gray background. In fact I don't want to limit myself to the colors in the default color palette for this icon. If you remember this 32 x 32 (256 color) icon contained only the colors found in the icon I opened. Besides the color changes I want to make (I'll use orange), I'd like to move the lock lower than the key in position. I also want to make another version with a transparent background (no orange) but just the lock & key. So in the end I will have two icons. One red background and one with transparent background. Both will have the lock moved down lower than the key.

The Steps

1. Open Microangelo and choose "File" + "Open" the gray lock & Key icon or the icon you want to modify.
2. In the top menu choose "Tools" + "New Image Format" you will see a new window like figure II. Make sure "True Color" is selected, I chose 32 x 32, and checked "Begin New Image Using Current Image". Immediately after clicking on "OK", you should see a completely new True Color palette open up. Now it's possible to make the icon have an orange background. First though lets simplify the icon's profile. See figure III and follow the recommendations in red.

3. From the new color palette I chose orange with the eyedropper. Then using the paint bucket and pencil tool pencil tool icon on the left of Studio's interface, I began changing the gray background to orange. >>> <<< Now that my icon is orange it's time to move the lock down. Click the link below to continue to Step 4.
